ARCHITECTS: BERNARDINO ZACCAGNI, GIOVANNI FRANCISCO, GIAN FRANCESCO d'AGRATE (1521-1539)

The Basilica Santa Maria della Steccata was built in the 16th century in what has been called a Greek-cross design Renaissance church style.
It was built on the site of a 1492 small oratory by the Knights of Malta.
The "Steccata" part of the name comes from the fence (steccato) used to corral the devotees who visited the famous image of the Madonna housed here.
